Welcome Day toivottaa vasta Suomeen muuttaneet uudet asukkaat tervetulleeksi Helsinkiin!
Tapahtumassa tuoreet kaupunkilaiset pääsevät tutustumaan oman asuinalueensa palveluihin, harrastuksiin ja vapaa-ajan tarjontaan.
Tapahtuman teema on tänä vuonna kesätori: Ala-Malmin tori muuttuu kesätoriksi ja hyödyllisen tiedon lisäksi osallistujat pääsevät nauttimaan torimaiseen tunnelmaan sopivasta ohjelmasta.
Säilättärien Metrilaku-menuetti yhdistää sirkusta, komiikkaa ja markkinahumua näyttäväksi spektaakkeliksi. Jay Jay Fun viihdyttää taikatempuilla ja akrobatialla, ja harmonikkataiteilija Seija Vesterinen vie osallistujat kesäisiin toritunnelmiin. Ohjelma huipentuu kaikille avoimeen Grande Mahoganyn konserttiin. Grande Mahogany heijastaa musiikin edelläkävijöiden henkeä, rikkoen rajoja ja loihtien soundin, jossa sykkii funkin elinvoima, alt-rockin rouheus ja psykedelia.
Tapahtumassa osallistujat pääsevät nauttimaan pullasta ja kahvista kuten suomalaiseen perinteeseen kuuluu.
Welcome Dayssa puhumme englantia, minkä lisäksi tarjoamme tulkkausta tarpeen mukaan. Tapahtuma on maksuton ja avoin kaikille.

Welcome Day hälsar invånare som nyligen flyttat till Finland välkomna till Helsingfors!
Under evenemanget får de nya stadsborna möjlighet att bekanta sig med tjänster, hobbyer och fritidsaktiviteter inom det egna bostadsområdet.
Temat för evenemanget i år är sommartorget: Nedre Malms torg förvandlas till ett sommartorg, och förutom användbar information får deltagarna njuta av program som passar den typiska torgstämningen.
Menuetten Säilättärien Metrilaku förenar cirkus, komik och torghandel till ett imponerande spektakel. Jay Jay Fun underhåller med trollkonster och akrobatik, och dragspelaren Seija Vesterinen förflyttar deltagarna till somrig marknadsstämning. Programmet kulminerar i ett svängigt framträdande av Grande Mahogany.
Under evenemanget får deltagarna njuta av kaffe och bulle enligt finländsk tradition.
På Welcome Day talar vi engelska, och dessutom erbjuder vi tolkning vid behov. Evenemanget är kostnadsfritt och öppet för alla.

The event gives new residents the chance to explore the services, hobbies and leisure activities available in their own residential area.
The theme of this year’s event is ‘summer market’: Ala-Malmi Square becomes a summer market, and in addition to gaining useful information, visitors get to enjoy a programme that fits in with the market atmosphere.
The Metrilaku minuet by Säilättäret combines circus, comedy and the hustle and bustle of a market into a spectacular show. Jay Jay Fun entertains the audience with magic tricks and acrobatics, and accordionist Seija Vesterinen transports attendees to a summertime market atmosphere. The programme culminates in a lively performance by Grande Mahogany.
Grande Mahogany reflects the spirit of music pioneers, breaking boundaries and crafting a sound pulsing with the vitality of funk, the rawness of alt-rock, and the expansiveness of psychedelia. Born in Finland, the musician absorbed global rhythms from an early age, and moving to Manchester at 11 deepened the multi-layered tapestry of his music.
At the event, participants also get to enjoy a sweet bun with coffee, as is the Finnish custom.
At Welcome Day, we speak English and provide interpretation if required. The event is free of charge and open to all.

KURTTURUUSUT
Kurtturuusut on lämminhenkinen komedia ystävyydestä, rakkaudesta ja ikääntymisestä.
Paula, Eini, Erika ja Sirkka – neljä seitsemänkymppistä leskinaista, ystävykset, Kurtturuusut. Naiset jakavat yhdessä elämäänsä, ja jaettavaa riittää. He eivät jää vaivojansa valittelemaan, vaan elävät itsensä näköistä elämää, nauttivat täysillä ja pitävät hauskaa yhdessä.
Mutta jotain puuttuu. Rakkaus.
Kurtturuusut syöksyvät rakkauden etsintään rohkeasti, sillä jos haluaa jotain tehdä, se on tehtävä nyt. Naiset alkavat tapailla erilaisia miehiä, joukossa niin vanhoja tuttuja kuin netin kautta löytyneitä uusia tuttavuuksia. Syntyy draamaa, komiikkaa, elämää.
Kurtturuusut on hehkuva ystävyyden ylistys ja korkealle kohotettu malja ikääntymisen iloille ja elämän kaikille sävyille!

”Haluatko olla uusi Eminem?” kysytään musiikkilehden ilmoituksessa. Skotlantilaiset kaverukset Gavin ja Billy sanovat kyllä. He ovat amatööriräppäreitä, jotka eivät saa uraansa alkuun skotlantilaisia karsastavassa Englannissa. Scottish rappers start posing as Californians to get their careers off the ground. James McAvoy's riotous directorial debut is based on a true story.
“Do you want to be the next Eminem?” asks an advert in a music magazine. Scottish friends Gavin and Billy answer yes. They are aspiring rappers unable to launch their careers in an England that looks down on Scots. Back home, their ambitions are met with rolled eyes; at auditions in London, their Scottish accents become the object of the judges’ laughter. What begins as a passing idea soon turns into a plan: they reinvent themselves as American rappers to gain the credibility they believe they deserve. Before long, “Brains” and “Silibili” find themselves under the wing of record producer Anthony (James McAvoy), on the road to money and fame. But deception leaves a long trail, and the burden of living a lie puts their friendship under severe strain.
The buzzword “impostor syndrome” has rarely felt more tangible than in this true story. California Schemin’ is a lively blend of genres: a dark comedy, a full-blooded music film, a deeply human drama, and at times even a thriller. For rap fans, it is pure delight. Uniting its many layers is a profoundly human story about friendship, ambition and the weight of deception.
Above all, the film is debut director James McAvoy’s love letter to Scotland, of which colourful characters, distinctive humour and fearless outlook on life reverberate through infectious rhymes and beats, shaking both the cinema walls and the audience to their core.

Sadat esittää itse pääosaa, tv-yhtiön kuvaaja Narua, pienen pojan äitiä, joka on eroamassa väkivaltaisesta miehestään. Naru kuvaa studiossa paikallista Dr. Philiä, mutta tahtoisi uutiskuvaajaksi. Kerran hän sitten pääsee tähtitoimittaja Qodratin matkaan ja osoittaa kyvykkyytensä reportaasikuvaukseen.
Koska Naru on nainen, hän saa haastatteluissa naiset avautumaan toisin kuin miehet. Elokuvan nimi juontaa tällaisesta tilanteesta, Narun tekemästä ystävänpäivän katugallupista, jossa nainen toisensa jälkeen todistaa, ettei Afganistanissa ole yhtään hyviä miehiä. Kaikki kohtelevat naisia kaltoin.
Narun ja Qodratin yhteistyö johtaa ystävyyteen ja vähän enempäänkin, ja elokuva kumartaa lopussa vähän Michael Curtizin Casablancalle. Afganistanista löytyy ehkä sittenkin yksi hyvä mies?

In this politically charged and romantic film, a TV camerawoman finds new love during the final days of freedom before the Taliban’s second takeover of Afghanistan.
Written and directed by Afghan filmmaker Shahrbanoo Sadat, the film No Good Men tackles heavy subjects with a light touch, in the style of a rom-com. It centres on the position of women and political news topics in Afghanistan just before the US withdrew from the country in 2021.
Sadat plays the lead role herself, as Naru, a camerawoman for a TV company and mother to a young son, who is in the process of divorcing her abusive husband. Naru films a local version of Dr. Phil in the studio but would prefer to be a news videographer. One day, she gets the chance to accompany star reporter Qodrat on an assignment and demonstrates her talent for reportage videography.
Because Naru is a woman, she gets women to open up in interviews in ways that men cannot. The film’s title stems from such a situation: a Valentine’s Day street poll conducted by Naru, in which one woman after another testifies that there are no good men in Afghanistan. Everyone treats women badly.
Naru and Qodrat’s collaboration leads to friendship and perhaps even a little more, and the film pays a slight homage to Michael Curtiz’s Casablanca at the end. Perhaps there is one good man in Afghanistan after all?

A group of prisoners fight for survival against a malevolent spirit in the gleefully unhinged Indonesian genre mash-up.
Prison awaits journalist Dimas when he’s found covered in blood in his boss’s office, the boss gutted and hung across the ceiling fan. For a nice guy like Dimas, prison is a scary place, but the gangs and the sadistic guards are just the beginning: when the grand-guignol-style murders continue within the prison walls, all hell literally breaks loose.
As the bodies mount, the prisoners begin to suspect Dimas. Soon, however, it becomes clear that supernatural forces are at work and no mortal man is safe. The prisoners will have to wield every conceivable weapon to survive.
The Indonesian jailhouse throwdown Ghost in the Cell gleefully breaks out of every genre thrown at it. Among its ingredients are drama, horror, martial arts, fantasy and slapstick, often within the same scene. The film creates for itself a freewheeling style in which a brawl can become a dance and gore effects share space with wholesome themes of friendship and collaboration.
Particular hilarity ensues when the prisoners discover that the spirit stalking them picks as its victims the angriest individuals, making positive thinking the most valuable weapon in their fight for survival.

In this crime drama by R&A favourite Sabu, a detective sets out to investigate a kidnapping operation, but his worsening dementia throws his plans into disarray.
The day after a bad night’s sleep can often feel sluggish. You are tired, and your ability to concentrate is put to the test. The protagonist of Arrested Memory, a detective by profession, carries a heavier burden than most: he is suffering from dementia.
When a child of a local businessman is kidnapped, detective Lee (Ethan Juan) sets off after the culprit, ransom in hand. But his advancing dementia throws all manner of obstacles in the way of the investigation. The operation goes off the rails almost immediately, and before long the detective finds himself fleeing not only the criminals but also his colleagues. Little by little, Lee’s tough exterior begins to crack. As the diagnosis unfolds, ghosts from the past begin to surface.
Cult director Sabu has been making films for thirty years, and it shows. Arrested Memory is a stylish and confident addition to the rich tradition of detective cinema. The cinematography favours warm colours, stillness and silence. Even amid breathtaking hand-to-hand fights, Sabu finds serene beauty. Although the film gives its protagonist’s unhurried journey room to breathe, it never forgets the essential ingredients of the genre: comedy and juicy action sequences.

A Scottish neighborhood rises up against immigration arrests on their own street, demonstrating the power of civic activism and community.
The date is 13 May, 2021, and as the local muslim community is preparing to celebrate Eid, the United Kingdom’s immigration agency launches a raid on Kenmure Street in Glasgow, Scotland.
Two men are apprehended and locked inside a van. This gives rise to a peaceful tour de force of civic activism and communality, as the multicultural neighbourhood comes together to protest the arrest of their members.
Felipe Bustos Sierra’s praised documentary has won recognition at Sundance Film Festival, among others. He portrays how everyone can bring something to further a common cause: while one can sneak under the van to stop it from moving, another might buy food to share from the local shop, and a third person can ring a lawyer.
Actors Emma Thompson, Kate Dickie, and Keira Lucchesi give their voices to three people who were present on the day. Along with interviews and fresh video footage, archival material is used to bring this protest into the wider context of civic activism in Glasgow.
Many countries are tightening their immigration policies. Many of us have either personal experiences of dealing with being arrested or threatened with arrest, or know someone who has faced these issues, or has at the very least seen such actions portrayed in the media. This documentary shows us, that if this happens on your own street, you don’t have be a bystander.

A darkly comic adult animation and sharp dystopia following Arnold, a middle-aged mouse who begins to suspect his entire life is merely a staged illusion.
Filmmaker Alberto Vázquez is responsible for some of the most unique work in contemporary Spanish animation (Psiconautas, Unicorn Wars). With Decorado, Vazquéz expands his Goya-winning short into a feature-length existential nightmare, its cutesy animation concealing a merciless examination of alienation, power and freedom.
Albert, a middle-aged and chronically unemployed mouse, begins to suspect his whole life, marriage, and the society around him are all staged. The mysterious death of a friend only deepens his paranoia, and his investigations soon lead him behind the façade of an all-powerful megacorporation. Decorado is not a classic conspiracy thriller, though; Vázquez constructs an absurdist fairytale, where reality is ever slipping out of reach.
All at the same time, Decorado toys with Disney’s classic animal animations, Orwellian dystopias and illusory reality á la The Truman Show. The final result is visually dizzy, morbidly comical and philosophically restless. This adult animation offers neither comfort nor moral lessons, but invites the viewer to question everything that seems obvious. If all the world’s a stage, who writes the script?

Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s samurai drama combines a murder mystery with a psychological power struggle in the spirit of Agatha Christie and Shakespeare.
Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure; Pulse, R&A 2002), renowned for his artistically ambitious horror cinema, ventures into new territory with the samurai drama The Samurai and the Prisoner.
Set in sixteenth-century Japan and adapted from the award-winning bestselling novel by Honobu Yonezawa, this period mystery unfolds across four seasons. The story begins as the rebellious samurai Araki Murashige (Masahiro Motoki) barricades himself inside Arioka Castle after taking up arms against his former ally, the ruthless warlord Oda Nobunaga. As the siege tightens, a series of brutal and inexplicable crimes shatters the fortress, and the desperate Murashige is forced to turn to the imprisoned enemy strategist Kuroda Kanbei for help.
Kurosawa transforms a sweeping historical war drama into an elegant locked-room mystery, gradually evolving into a psychologically charged struggle for power reminiscent of Shakespearean tragedy. As suspicion and guilt consume the minds of those trapped within the castle walls, paranoia and betrayal spread unchecked. The fortress becomes a microcosm where political manoeuvring, loyalty and fear slowly erode the community from within.
