Kannelmäen kirjastossa satutuokiot pidetään tiistaisin 29.8.- 28.11.2023 klo 10.00-10.30. Ne on suunnattu 3-6 -vuotiaille lapsille.

The listener first collects a map entitled \"Adventures in White Privilege\" from the brochure stand next to the info desk on the first floor of Oodi Central Library. The map includes a QR code that can be scanned with a smartphone, which will open a link where the audiopiece can be either streamed or downloaded. The listener can then hear the track through headphones and follow the directions of the audio and the map.

For potential listeners who require the loan of headphones and/or mp3 player to access the piece, there will be a small number available on request at the info desk.

The piece is free of charge and will be launched at 15.00 on 24.09.23 and will be available at any time during Oodi's opening hours until 24.10.23.

Oulia Makkonen is a film and religious studies scholar with specific focus on African screen media. Beyond religion and film, her research interests encompass film festivals’ curatorial practices and transnational cinematic language within African and African diaspora studies. Presently, Oulia Makkonen is based in Sweden and works as research coordinator for Uppsala University’s Forum for Africa studies.

AfriStadi, the Africa Research Forum for Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki, invites you to the screening of two short films by choreographer and filmmaker Ima Iduozee. The films, Diaspora mixtapes and After we’re gone, picture Diaspora experiences in Finland. They will be followed by a panel discussion. This event opens AfriStadi’s celebration of BHM is an annual event celebrating African Americans since 1926 in the US, where it is held in February. The festival is also established in the UK and Ireland, where it takes place in October. We are celebrating Black History Month in Helsinki this October. Our goal is to showcase the contributions of African Diaspora members to society and knowledge production in Finland and the Nordic countries and to disseminate societally relevant Africa research in Finland and the Nordic countries.

About the films

Diaspora Mixtapes vol. 1 is the first part of Iduozee's series of works that celebrate the past, present & future of the African Diaspora. In this art-house documentary, artists, activists and entrepreneurs’ around the Diaspora share their story through music, poetry, autobiography and interviews. The first part of the series, vol. 1, was filmed in South Africa, Denmark, Germany, Jamaica and Finland during 2019. The film features Jaamil Olawale Kosoko, Yeboyah, Maryan Abdulkarim, Joy Mariama Smith, Isaac Sene and Adri Mena.

After We're Gone. Zena enters an underground shrine to meet the royal priestess. As the ritual begins, she re-imagines the journey of the African Diaspora. Using the narrative conventions of documentary and fiction, the now, the past and the future are rethought to create an ode to those who have paved the way. Unfolding through the lens on Ima Iduozee, the film features archival footage of Lola Odusoga, Rosa Emilia Clay, Donata Pennanen, FESTAC 77, Windrush 1948, Sun Ra, Barbara Ann Teer, Miriam Makeba, Muraina Oyelami and more. After We’re Gone is the second part of Diaspora Mixtapes, a series or works that celebrates the past, present and future of the African Diaspora.

About the speakers

Ima Iduozee is a choreographer, film director and DJ. His debut choreography This is The Title (2012) caught international attention, and he toured in 16 countries to present it. He has worked as a choreographer for the Finnish National Opera, the Finnish National Theater, and the theaters of Helsinki and Stockholm, among others. His short film After We're Gone received its premiere at Kiasma, and its international premiere at film festivals in San Francisco.

Maryan Abdulkarim is a Somali-Finnish screen writer and journalist, and she is based in Helsinki.

Elvis Fuamba is the chairperson and co-founder of Afrofinns ry, an independent nonprofit association whose mission is to elevate, encourage and support more self-reliance within the community. Elvis is also a photographer, documentarist, and social entrepreneur; he has been an entrepreneur for 20 years in Finland. As a documentarist, Elvis recently completed a documentary called \"Cultural Crossroads,\" which explores Afrofinns' culture, creation and transmission of the Afrofinns' culture to the next generation. This documentary was screened at the Helsinki City Museum as part of the \"Being Black\" exhibition.

Oulia Makkonen is a film and religious studies scholar with specific focus on African screen media. Suomen toinen eläinoikeusraportti julkistetaan Oodin Kuutio-salissa (2. kerros) maanantaina 2.10.2023 klo 17–19.45.

Eläinten oikeudet eivät ole saaneet jalansijaa ilmastokeskustelussa, vaikka eläintuotanto muodostaa valtavan ilmasto-ongelman. Silloin kun eläintuotanto huomioidaan ilmastokriisin torjunnassa, se tehdään ilman eläinetiikkaa. Eläinten oikeudet jäävät sivuun pelkästään päästöjen vähentämiseen keskittyvässä ilmastopolitiikassa.

Animalian järjestyksessään toisen Eläinoikeusraportin fokuksessa ovat ilmaston, ympäristön ja eläinten oikeuksien leikkauspiste ja yhtenä erityiskysymyksenä broilerit ja kalat. Eläinoikeusraportti valaisee eläinten oikeuksien toteutumista Suomessa ja popularisoi tutkimustietoa eläinten kohtelusta Suomessa. Raportti sisältää myös ulkopuoliselta tilatun gallupin.

Julkaisutilaisuudessa kuullaan myös Greenpeacen, Suomen luonnonsuojeluliiton ja WWF:n edustajia. Yleisöllä on mahdollisuus esittää kysymyksiä. 

Tilaisuuteen osallistuville jaetaan raportin painettu kappale.

Tilaisuus on avoin kaikille. Kuutioon mahtuu enintään 50 henkilöä. Tapahtumaa ei suoratoisteta.

Asianajajapäivystyksessä vapaaehtoiset asianajajat antavat maksutonta alkuneuvontaa oikeudellisissa asioissa. Asianajaja kertoo, onko asiassa tarpeen hakea lisää asiantuntija-apua ja ohjaa tarvittaessa asiaan perehtyneen asianajajan tai oikean viranomaisen puoleen. Päivystyksessä ei voida laatia asiakirjoja eikä hoitaa laajempia toimeksiantoja.
Jokaiselle asiakkaalle on varattu n. 15 min asiointiaikaa. Päivystyksessä käydyt keskustelut ovat aina luottamuksellisia.

Tapulikaupungin kirjastossa järjestetään esitelmällinen soolokonsertti János Starkerin jalanjäljillä maanantaina 2.10. klo 18.

János Starker (1924 – 2013) oli yksi merkittävimpiä sellistejä. Konsertissa sellisti Olli Varonen esittää János Starkerin usein esittämää ohjelmaa. Konsertissa kuullaan unkarilaista kansanmusiikkia sekä mm. Bachin, Cassadon ja Kodályn sävellyksiä.

Konserttiin on vapaa pääsy. (Kirjastoon mahtuu maksimissaan noin 80 kuulijaa.)

Kontulan kirjaston vieraaksi saapuu tietokirjailija Rinna Saramäki.

Saramäki on tuttu kestävän vaateteollisuuden ja -kulutuksen puolestapuhuja ja kirjoittanut useita tietokirjoja.

Teoksessaan 250 ilmastotekoa, jolla pelastat maailman (Otava 2020) Saramäki tarjoaa joka kuukaudelle käytännöllisiä vinkkejä, joita noudattamalla voi arjen keskelläkin pienentää hiilijalanjälkeä. Hän kertoo tutkimustietoon perustuvat ohjeet ilmastonmuutoksen hillintään aina vaatevalinnoista bokashikompostointiin.

250 ilmastotekoa -teoksen, käsityöoppaiden ja lastenkirjojen lisäksi hän on julkaissut teoksen pikamuodin ja vaatekulutuksen ongelmista, Hyvän mielen vaatekaappi (Atena 2014).

Saramäkeä haastattelee Elina Viirret Kontulan kirjastosta. Tilaisuus on avoin kaikille.

Tapahtuma on osa Itä-Helsingin kirjastojen Tulevaisuus tänään -tietokirjailijakiertuetta. Kiertueen tapahtumissa pohdimme tietokirjailijoiden ja asiantuntijoiden kanssa sitä, miltä tulevaisuus näyttää tämän päivän vinkkelistä, ja toisaalta miten tämän päivän toiminta ja ratkaisut muovaavat tulevaisuuden näkymiä.

IT IS OPEN STAGE palaa Itäkeskuksen kirjaston Musaloungeen lokakuussa!

Syksyn ensimmäisen klubin avaa keväällä ensimmäisen rap-albuminsa julkaissut Ester Nuori Leppä.

Ester Nuori Leppä (oik. Essi Leppänen) on helsinkiläinen runoilija, rap-artisti ja kirjanpainaja, jonka ensimmäinen täyspitkä runokokoelma Maanantai ja mustat hitit (WSOY) ilmestyi elokuussa 2022. Leppä kiinnostuu maailmankaikkeuden rakenteesta ja juo vissynsä pullosta. Hän on äärimmäisen utelias ja taiteessa suuntautunut epäonnistuneiden ja raadollisten ihmiskohtaloiden kuvaamiseen.

Esityksen jälkeen alkaa tunnin mittainen Open Stage -osuus, jonka esiintyjät on valittu mukaan avoimella haulla.
