Event on Afro-Finnish music: live music & panel discussion

In recent years, Finland has seen a rise of young AfroFinnish artists, especially in rap/hip hop, but musicians of African descent have actually been around and influential in Finnish music much longer. And, of course, many styles of “Black music” such as jazz, rock, soul and hip hop, have been played also by white Finnish musicians. We are taking a look at this Black history of Finnish music with a panel discussion that includes three musicians of African and Afro-Caribbean descent who have all influenced the Finnish music scene in their own ways. We will talk about their careers and experiences of working in the Finnish music scene, and also outside Finland. We will also discuss their views on the developments that have taken place in Finland and their views for the future.

The event will be opened with live music by Ismaila Sané and musicians from his band, Saïsba.

The panel discussion is chaired by Elina Seye, an ethnomusicologist and dance researcher affiliated with the University of Helsinki.

Entry is free, as for all Afristadi's events! This event is part of Etnosoi, and Black History Month 2023.

About the panelists

Bianca Morales is a Finnish-Cuban jazz vocalist and composer who started her singing career very young in the early 1980s and gained a lot of visibility in Finland after winning the Kevään sävel competition arranged by the Finnish MTV3 channel in 1984. Until today she has been performing jazz music especially with Grani Big Band, but she has also recorded music with other bands and played in several musicals. Apart from being well established in the Finnish jazz scene, she has strong connections to the USA.

Menard Mponda is a Tanzanian musician and dancer who has been living in Finland since 1995. He is best known in Finland as the artistic director of Fest Afrika festival, the oldest festival of African performing arts in Finland, organized in Tampere since 2002. He is also active as a teacher of traditional Tanzanian dances and drumming, which he has been teaching widely to school children. As a musician, he has been involved in several bands, such as Helsinki-Cotonou Ensemble and Arnold Chiwalala Band.

Ismaila Sané is a Senegalese musician and dancer who started his career in Dakar, Senegal, moved to Spain in the early 1980s and to Finland in 1999. He is a long-standing percussionist of Piirpauke, a Finnish world music fusion band led by Sakari Kukko, that he joined in the late 1980s when he was living in Tenerife. Both in Spain and in Finland he has collaborated with many local musicians, playing West African styles, reggae, jazz, and many kinds of fusions. He also teaches West African dances and drumming. In recent years, his main focus has been on his own Saïsba band.

Itä saa mitä tilaa – suunnitellaan yhdessä elämäsi keskus

Kulttuurikeskus Stoa uudistuu ja laajenee 2030-luvulla. Tavoitteemme on tehdä tila, joka on koko Itä-Helsingin ikioma ylpeyden aihe ja itähelsinkiläisen kulttuurin ja arjen keskus.

Tulevaisuuden Stoassa voit luoda, kokea, harrastaa, leikkiä, työskennellä, juhlia, oppia ja opiskella.

Koska kukaan ei tunne itää paremmin kuin sen asukkaat, kutsumme kaupunkilaiset ideoimaan, millainen yhteinen Stoamme voisi olla 2030-luvulla. Tule mukaan muodostamaan ideoiden ja toiveiden 2030°+-yhteisöteosta Stoan galleriaan 24.–29.10.2023. Osallistua voit talon aukioloaikoina eli ma-to klo 8-20, pe klo 8-18, la klo 10-16 ja su klo 12-18.

Kolmiulotteisen osallistavan teoksen Stoan galleriaan ovat suunnitelleet tutkija-taiteilijat Lauri Jäntti ja Francisco Trento sekä kuvataiteilija Anniina Lius. Teos rakentuu ja täydentyy Stoan Tulevaisuuslaboratoriossa vierailevien kaupunkilaisten ajatuksista, ideoista, haaveista, toiveista ja niiden kytköksistä.

Stoassa 24.–29.10. järjestettävässä Tulevaisuuslaboratorio-tapahtumakokonaisuudessa kaupunkilaiset rakentavat Stoan yhteistä tulevaisuusnäkymää. Tapahtumakokonaisuuteen kuuluu kaikille kaupunkilaisille avoimen 2030°+-yhteisöteoksen lisäksi eri vierailijaryhmille suunnattuja työpajoja sekä kävijöille jaettavia tehtäväpaketteja. Kertyvää tietoa hyödynnämme Stoan tulevan laajennusosan ja perusparannuksen suunnittelussa.

Coco kertoo 12-vuotiaasta meksikolaisesta Miguel-pojasta, joka rakastaa musiikkia toisin kuin muu sukunsa ja joutuu odottamatta suvun kitaran taikavoiman viemänä kuolleiden valtakuntaan, jossa kukaan elävä ei ole käynyt. Elokuva perustuu meksikolaisen vainajien muistojuhlan (Día de los Muertos, kuolleiden päivä) inspiroimaan tarinaan.'

Coco tells the story of a 12-year-old Mexican boy named Miguel, who loves music unlike the rest of his family and is unexpectedly taken by the magic power of the family's guitar to the realm of the dead, where no living person has been. The film is based on a story inspired by the Mexican celebration of remembrance of the dead (Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead).

Right after the movie, mexican artists Alicia Sevilla and Claudia Herrera will help you to create your own nicho, a colorful and traditional decorative piece to celebrate Día de Muertos.

Animaatiokilta ry juhlistaa Kansainvälistä Animaatiopäivää lauantaina 28.10. Keskustakirjasto Oodin Aura-salissa ilmaisella lyhytanimaationäytöksellä.

Kansainvälistä Animaatiopäivää juhlitaan maailmanlaajuisesti joka vuosi 28.10. Tuona päivänä vuonna 1892 ranskalainen Emile Reynaud esitti ensimmäistä kertaa yleisölle liikkuvaa kuvaa Theatre Optiquessa Pariisissa. Tuolloin katsotaan myös animaation syntyneen.

Samana päivänä Oodissa järjestetään myös Animaatiokillan jäsenille suunnattu IdeaLab, jossa jäsenet voivat vapaamuotoisesti keskustella omista kehitteillä olevista projekteista tai ideoista taiteelliselle projektille. Projekti voi olla niin animaatio, elokuva, sarjakuva, kirja, peli, näyttely tai ihan lähes mitä vain.

You can get help on sewing problems and advice on how to use a sewing machine from a craft teacher. Bring along your sewing project or a garment to be mended and preferably also sewing thread of a suitable color, and any other necessary materials (e.g. zipper, button, patch material).

Järjestämme Oodin kaupunkiverstaalla kaksi ompeluklinikkaa, lauantaina 28.10. ja 9.12. Paikalla on käsityönopettaja, jolta saat apua ja neuvoja ompelun pulmatilanteisiin ja ompelukoneen käyttöön. Ota mukaan oma ompeluprojektisi tai korjattava vaate, ja tarvittaessa sopivan väristä ompelulankaa ja muu tarvittava materiaali (esim. vetoketju, nappi, paikkamateriaali).

Kirjastolla on mustaa, valkoista ja harmaata ompelulankaa sekä perustarvikkeet ompeluun. Käytössä on ompelukoneita ja saumureita. Huomioithan, että voit joutua odottamaan vuoroasi koneille. Tapahtuma on maksuton ja avoin kaiken tasoisille ompelijoille, tervetuloa mukaan!

Taiteilija inspiroituu luonnon ohikiitävistä hetkistä ja ilmiöistä, ja kokee luonnon olevan täynnä symboliikkaa omille kokemuksille ja tunteille. Näiden tulkintojen ja maalien erilaisilla, intuitiivisilla yhdistelmillä muodostuu abstraktia taidetta täynnä tunteita ja merkityksiä.

Iltapäivällä klo 13.00–14.30 halloween-tapahtuma jatkuu jännittävällä koko perheen elokuvalla (S) Wallace & Gromit: Kanin kirous.

Oleksandr Mykhed is a guest of the first Ukrainian program at the Helsinki Book Fair 2023 (Helsingin kirjamessut). Together with the Finnish writer Sofi Oksanen, he will participate in the discussion \"Ukrainian sisu\" on the central Senaatintori stage of the fair on 27 October at 19:00.

The author will present his new book \"Language of War. Chronicles of the Invasion\" (2023) at Oodi on 28 October. The book published by “The Old Lion Publishing House” is currently among the bestsellers on the Ukrainian market.

Mykhed started working on the book on the first day of the full-scale invasion that happened in the eighth year of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Writing lasted for thirteen months. The book is based on the experience of the author and his wife, his parents who were in occupied Bucha for almost three weeks, and the experiences of many Ukrainians.

\"Language of War\" will be available for purchase during the presentation.

Oleksandr Mykhed is the author of 9 books, a member of the Ukrainian PEN, a participant in literary residencies in Finland, Latvia, Iceland, the USA and France. His articles are published in “The Guardian”, “Financial Times”, etc.

Moderator of the event is Nataliya Teramae, journalist, coordinator of cultural projects of the Ukrainian Association in Finland.

Олександр Михед - цьогорічний гість першої Української програми на Гельсінському книжковому ярмарку (Helsingin kirjamessut). 27 жовтня разом із фінською письменницею Софі Оксанен він бере участь у дискусії “Українське сісу”, на центральній сцені ярмарку Senaatintori о 19:00.

28 жовтня - презентує в Ооді свою нову книжку “Позивний для Йова. Хроніки вторгнення” (Видавництво старого лева, 2023), яка сьогодні в топ-продажах на українському ринку.

Михед почав її писати у перший день широкомасштабного вторгнення, що трапилося на восьмому році російсько-­української війни. Робота тривала протягом тринадцяти місяців. У книзі - досвід автора і його дружини, його батьків, які майже три тижні були в окупованій Бучі, і переживання багатьох українців.

“Позивний для Йова” можна буде придбати на зустрічі та отримати автограф.

Олександр Михед – автор 9 книг, член Українського ПЕН, учасник літературних резиденцій у Фінляндії, Латвії, Ісландії, США та Франції. Його статті публікую в The Guardian, Financial Times тощо.

Добро пожаловать в книжный клуб !

Приглашаем тебя, 10-14 летний подросток, если ты любишь читать и общаться на разные темы. Книжный клуб бесплатный и к нему не нужно готовиться заранее.

На встрече мы все вместе читаем/слушаем короткий текст на русском языке, а потом разговариваем об этом тексте и просто о жизни. Каждый участник имеет право высказать то, что он думает, или просто послушать других, думая о своём.

В осеннем сезоне 2023 встречи книжного клуба проходят три раза в месяц по субботам с 12 до 13:30.
