Programmin course is cancelled in autumn 2023. The course will continue next year 2024.

Come to the free programming classes to learn about the basics of Linux operating system and Python programming. Classes can be held in Finnish and English, at Hakunila library, Vantaa, every Tuesday 5 September 2023 – 5 December 2023.

If you are interested, mail me in linuxpy2022@gmail.com informing briefly about your educational background and motivation to study this course. The only requirement for this course is an open mind with eagerness to learn!

Please note, that there are no course on week 42 (autumn holiday for schools)

Добро пожаловать в нашу разговорную группу, где мы беседуем на русском языке в спокойной, расслабленной обстановке!

Нам не важно, какого уровня ваше знание русского языка, мы приглашаем всех от начинающих до носителей русского языка как родного.

Беседу ведет сотрудник библиотеки, но разговор всегда можно продожить в свободной форме.

Группа для бесед на русском языке собирается по вторникам два раза в месяц на 2-м этаже библиотеки Myyrmäki с 13.00-14.00 часов.

В осеннем полугодии 2023 собрания группы: 3.10, 10.10, 7.11, 21.11, 5.12 и 19.12.

We look forward to seeing you every Tuesday, from 29 August, from 10 to 11 am, in the green room of the children's section of the Pasila Library.

All families are welcome. PICNIC is made by all of us, so come along and bring something to share!

AfriStadi, the Africa Research Forum for Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki, invites you to the screening of two short films by choreographer and filmmaker Ima Iduozee. The films, Diaspora mixtapes and After we’re gone, picture Diaspora experiences in Finland. They will be followed by a panel discussion. This event opens AfriStadi’s celebration of BHM is an annual event celebrating African Americans since 1926 in the US, where it is held in February. The festival is also established in the UK and Ireland, where it takes place in October. We are celebrating Black History Month in Helsinki this October. Our goal is to showcase the contributions of African Diaspora members to society and knowledge production in Finland and the Nordic countries and to disseminate societally relevant Africa research in Finland and the Nordic countries.

About the films

Diaspora Mixtapes vol. 1 is the first part of Iduozee's series of works that celebrate the past, present & future of the African Diaspora. In this art-house documentary, artists, activists and entrepreneurs’ around the Diaspora share their story through music, poetry, autobiography and interviews. The first part of the series, vol. 1, was filmed in South Africa, Denmark, Germany, Jamaica and Finland during 2019. The film features Jaamil Olawale Kosoko, Yeboyah, Maryan Abdulkarim, Joy Mariama Smith, Isaac Sene and Adri Mena.

After We're Gone. Zena enters an underground shrine to meet the royal priestess. As the ritual begins, she re-imagines the journey of the African Diaspora. Using the narrative conventions of documentary and fiction, the now, the past and the future are rethought to create an ode to those who have paved the way. Unfolding through the lens on Ima Iduozee, the film features archival footage of Lola Odusoga, Rosa Emilia Clay, Donata Pennanen, FESTAC 77, Windrush 1948, Sun Ra, Barbara Ann Teer, Miriam Makeba, Muraina Oyelami and more. After We’re Gone is the second part of Diaspora Mixtapes, a series or works that celebrates the past, present and future of the African Diaspora.

About the speakers

Ima Iduozee is a choreographer, film director and DJ. His debut choreography This is The Title (2012) caught international attention, and he toured in 16 countries to present it. He has worked as a choreographer for the Finnish National Opera, the Finnish National Theater, and the theaters of Helsinki and Stockholm, among others. His short film After We're Gone received its premiere at Kiasma, and its international premiere at film festivals in San Francisco.

Maryan Abdulkarim is a Somali-Finnish screen writer and journalist, and she is based in Helsinki.

Elvis Fuamba is the chairperson and co-founder of Afrofinns ry, an independent nonprofit association whose mission is to elevate, encourage and support more self-reliance within the community. Elvis is also a photographer, documentarist, and social entrepreneur; he has been an entrepreneur for 20 years in Finland. As a documentarist, Elvis recently completed a documentary called \"Cultural Crossroads,\" which explores Afrofinns' culture, creation and transmission of the Afrofinns' culture to the next generation. This documentary was screened at the Helsinki City Museum as part of the \"Being Black\" exhibition.

Oulia Makkonen is a film and religious studies scholar with specific focus on African screen media. Beyond religion and film, her research interests encompass film festivals’ curatorial practices and transnational cinematic language within African and African diaspora studies. Presently, Oulia Makkonen is based in Sweden and works as research coordinator for Uppsala University’s Forum for Africa studies.

Itäkeskus Library is organizing a pop-up workshop for the Zineton - Zine challenge weekend. All levels of zine makers are welcome, regardless of experience. We celebrate diverse zines, whether they're digital or handmade!

Zineton is a creative marathon where you make a zine in just one weekend. After the challenge, your zines will be showcased on zineton.com gallery and zines submitted in PDF format will also be printed and sent to the authors!

Workshop materials:
You have, e.g. scanner, photo software (Gimp, Photoshop C6), paper cutter, copy machine and recycled materials (e.g. scrapbooks and magazines) to realise your zine. A limited number of free prints are reserved for participants. Once the limit is reached, prints cost €0.40 per A4 strip.

The workshop is open:
- on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
+ and on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
You can stay for a while or spend the whole day working on your magazine at the library. They have a collection of previous years’ Zineton zines and related materials on display, which can inspire your zine.

The workshop will take place in the Kaupunkiverstas, Itäkeskus library hall (Turunlinnantie 1, Kulttuuritalo Stoa).

>Note: Please register through zineton.com to submit your zine officially to get it displayed in the zineton.com gallery and to get prints (if submitted as a pdf file). Zineton registration will close on Thursday, September 28th, at 3 p.m. The workshop at the library is free, and no advance registration is necessary!

We are happy to announce and warmly welcome you to ‘DIALOGUES - An Ode to Textile Stories’, an exhibition of textile narratives, artistic exploration, material solutions and design pedagogy showcasing the multitude of textile work in Aalto University.

The exhibition takes place in collaboration with Central Library Oodi for the month of September.

The exhibition continues the series of DIALOGUES events, showcasing propositions for textile futures. DIALOGUES launched in New York in November 2022 with a joint exhibition and seminar by Aalto University and Parsons - The New School. The exhibition was expanded on return to Dipoli Gallery, Aalto University in December 2023. The partnership with Oodi Library brings textile stories from Aalto University to new audiences in Helsinki.

Vi är glada att kunna berätta om och varmt välkomna er till ”DIALOGUES - An Ode to Textile Stories”, en utställning bestående av textila berättelser, konstnärlig utforskning, materiella lösningar och designpedagogik som visar upp de många textilverksamheterna vid Aalto-universitetet.

Utställningen äger rum under september månad, i samarbete med centrumbiblioteket Ode.

Utställningen är en fortsättning på serien av DIALOGUES-evenemang och visar upp förslag för framtidens textilier. Many sites globally have been polluted by human action. Until now remediation of these sites has been troublesome and inefficient because it has required a lot of energy and usually complex chemicals. With new technologies that utilize synthetic biology, remediation will be easier and more efficient.

Bioremediation can be used for multiple remediation sites both on land and in water. Both Finnish iGEM teams try to bioremediate waters: ABOA from toxic methylmercury and Aalto-Helsinki from microplastics.

Välkommen med på filmfredag! I Sellobibliotekets Jaminurkka ordnas det varje fredagkväll kl. 18.00 en filmvisning för barn och familjer. Vi väljer filmerna utifrån barnens önskemål. Kom och berätta ditt önskemål till bibliotekets personal och bekanta dig med schemat för filmvisningarna på barnavdelningen i Sellobiblioteket.

Filmerna har rekommendationsålder T (tillåten för alla åldrar) eller 7 (tillåten för barn över 7 år). Språket för föreställningen är finska. Språket för textningen väljs enligt barnens önskemål.
