Tänä keväänä Pasilan kirjastossa järjestetään avoin luentosarja, jossa eri tieteenalojen edustajat kertovat tutkimusaiheistaan. Luennot pidetään tiistaisin klo 17.30-19.00 kirjaston auditoriossa (2. krs.).

2.4. Miten voimme tietää menneistä maailmoista?
Mikael Fortelius, prof. emer., Geotieteiden ja maantieteen osasto ja LUOMUS, Helsingin yliopisto

Esitelmässään Mikael Fortelius kertoo miten paleontologit käyttävät hyväksi fossiilisia hampaita selvittääkseen muinaisten ekosysteemien olosuhteita ja niitä evoluution prosesseja, jotka ovat muovanneet lajien ja eliöyhteisöjen sopeutumista ympäristön muutoksiin. Lopuksi hän tarkastelee ihmisen luonnetta ja tulevaisuuden näkymiä tästä näkökulmasta.

Mikael Fortelius on evoluutiopaleontologian emeritusprofessori Helsingin yliopistossa ja Luonnontieteellisessä keskusmuseossa. Hän on erityisen kiinnostunut ilmaston ja kasvillisuuden muutosten vaikutuksesta kasvinsyöjänisäkkäiden evoluutioon ja siitä, miten fossiiliaineistoissa säilyneitä hampaita voidaan hyödyntää syvän ajan evoluutioprosessien tutkimuksessa.

Elokuva perustuu Anni Blomqvistin samannimiseen romaaniin ja sijoittuu 1800-luvun Suomen rannikkoseudulle. Nuori 17-vuotias Maija avioituu vasten tahtoaan kalastajamies Jannen kanssa. Hänen elämänsä Myrskyluodolla on täynnä haasteita ja vastoinkäymisiä: kalastajan vaimona hän joutuu selviytymään miehensä pitkistä poissaoloista merellä ja huolehtimaan perheestään yksin.
