Jonesin sävellykset soivat tänäkin päivänä isojen jazzyhtyeiden ohjelmistoissa kautta maailman.</p><p><b>Thad Jonesin</b> (1923–1986) syntymästä tuli maaliskuussa kuluneeksi 100 vuotta. UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra kunnioittaa juhlavuotta tällä konsertilla, solistinaan trumpetisti <b>Jukka Eskola</b> ja kapellimestarinaan <b>Antti Rissanen</b>. Konserteissa kuullaan mestarin sävellyksiä <b>Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestran</b> ohjelmistosta 1960–1970-luvulta. <br> <br>Thad Jones ja <b>Mel Lewis</b> vierailivat UMOssa joulukuussa 1977. Hesperian yökerhon konsertin lisäksi samalla vierailulla levytettiin Thad Jones, Mel Lewis & UMO -nimeä kantava albumi, joka oli sittemmin Grammy-ehdokkaana Best Jazz Instrumental Performance – Big Band -kategoriassa vuonna 1979. Tuon vierailun seurauksena UMOn silloinen trumpetisti <b>Simo Salminen</b> kiinnitettiin Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestran riveihin.</p><p><b>Jukka Eskola</b> (s. 1978) on ilahduttanut jazzkansaa musiikillaan jo 25 vuoden ajan. Omien yhtyeidensä Jukka Eskola Soul Trion, Jukka Eskola Quintetin ja Jukka Eskola Orquestra Bossan lisäksi aktiivisesti eri kokoonpanoissa soittava trumpetisti on nähty muun muassa The Five Corners Quintetin ja Ricky-Tick Big Bandin riveissä. Trumpetistin ansioluettelosta löytyy muun muassa kuusi soololevyä, parisataa levytystä, Jazzliiton Yrjö-palkinto, Pori Jazzin Vuoden taiteilija -palkinto, Emma-ehdokkuuksia, teatteriproduktioita ja opetustöitä. Eskolan voi bongata myös television viihdeohjelmien orkestereista.</p><p><b>Antti Rissanen</b> (s. 1975) on Suomen big band -musiikin voimahahmo; säveltäjä-sovittaja, kapellimestari, pasunisti ja pedagogi. Hän on valmistunut Sibelius-Akatemiasta maisteriksi ja tohtoriksi. Rissanen on johtanut UMOn lisäksi useita nimekkäitä sinfoniaorkestereita. Hän opettaa Sibelius-Akatemiassa ja Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulussa ja toimi Suomen Big Band -yhdistyksen puheenjohtajana yli 10 vuotta.</p><p><b>UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra</b> on jazzin ja rytmimusiikin saralla ammattimaisesti toimiva orkesteri, joka esiintyy vuosittain noin sadassa konsertissa ja tapahtumassa. Vuodesta 1975 alkaen UMO Helsinki on julkaissut yli 60 albumia ja esiintynyt kotimaisten huippunimien lisäksi kansainvälisten jazztähtien kanssa. Even today, his compositions are key repertoire of big bands all over the world.</p><p>The year 2023 marks 100 years of the master composer’s birth. To celebrate the anniversary year, the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra honors this concert with trumpeter <b>Jukka Eskola</b> as soloist and <b>Antti Rissanen</b> as conductor. The concerts feature Jones’ master compositions from the repertoire of the <b>Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra</b> from 1960’s and 1970’s.</p><p>Thad Jones and <b>Mel Lewis</b> visited UMO in December 1977. In addition to the concert at the Hesperia nightclub, an album called Thad Jones, Mel Lewis & UMO was recorded on the same visit. The album was later nominated for a Grammy in the Best Jazz Instrumental Performance – Big Band category in 1979. After the visit, UMO's then-trumpeter Simo Salminen was attached to the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra.</p><p><b>Jukka Eskola</b> (b. 1978) has been delighting jazz people with his music for 25 years. In addition to his own bands Jukka Eskola Soul Trio, Jukka Eskola Quintet and Jukka Eskola Orquestra Bossa, the busy trumpeter has played in the groups Five Corners Quintet and Ricky-Tick Big Band. Eskola’s resume includes, among other things, six solo albums, a couple of hundred recordings, Finnish Jazz Federation’s Yrjö prize, Pori Jazz Artist of the Year award, several Emma nominations, theatre productions and many teaching posts. He graduated from the Sibelius Academy with a master's degree and a doctorate. In addition to UMO, Rissanen has conducted several famous symphony orchestras.
